Chris Bloom is doing a talk!
Notes so far:
“`
I’m a Sr Software Engineer at GitHub working on software supply chain security. I live in Sarasota with my family of 6 and our backyard chickens.
I’d like to give a talk on simulated annealing, an algorithm for finding approximate solutions to optimization problems. I gave a version of this talk at RubyConf 2022 in Houston, and I have some ideas for improving it that I’d love to try out with local devs. It’s a 30 minute talk that could be extended if necessary. In the first half of the talk I introduce optimization problems, demonstrate their scaling issues, and discuss why we may need to settle for an approximate solution to one and what that means. Then in the second half I introduce simulated annealing, discuss its roots, and show how we can use it to solve complex optimization problems. The code examples I use are in Ruby, but this topic is generally applicable to all programming languages and a wide variety of problems.
